Random Project 2012

Posted in London, Random Project by Type Tasting on January 18, 2012

After the success of the Random Project in 2006, it seems very timely to launch a new 2012 version to coincide with the Olympics coming to London.

The Random Project 2012 will showcase a growing collection of postcards which are created by everybody. These will celebrate the spirit of London 2012 and enable us to visually document the shared cultural experience as the year unfolds – we will all become the artists-in-residence for a historic year.

The project is open to everybody to take part in; from artists to school children to athletes. Each postcard is designed in response to a randomly assigned word relating to either 2012, London or the Olympics.

To take part please email with a number between 1 and 100. You will be sent your word along with full instructions.

The postcards will be on view in the Random Project 2012 virtual gallery which will open on February 1st 2012. A physical exhibition will be planned later in the year.

Contributors to the 2006 project included Ed Fella, Stefan Sagmeister, Ralph Steadman, Alan Kitching, Alan Rickman and Isabelle aged 7, to name just a few.

Background information
The Random Project 2012 is a not for profit art project initiated by graphic designer Sarah Hyndman. It will launch publicly on 1st February and run until September 2012. It is open to everybody to participate in.

The Random Project first ran in 2006 as part of the London Design Festival. The project was featured in Design Week, listed in Time Out in 10 things to see at the LDF, we sold fundraising Goody Bags on Brick Lane, Dave Gorman featured Random in his blog, we held a second exhibition in Clerkenwell, a lively typography pub quiz at The Foundry, were invited to exhibit at St Bride Type Library, organised two more type quizzes at St Brides and have an online presence which has continued to get contributions from around the globe.

Organiser Sarah Hyndman is the creative director of With Relish, a design and marketing company that she set up eight years ago. Sarah studied an MA in Typo/graphics at the London College of Communication. She was subsequently invited back to set up and run the part time Experimental Typography course. The Random Project 2006 was an idea that started whilst teaching this course.
