Desks are available by the day in a bright, friendly studio in a converted Chocolate Factory overlooking a pretty courtyard. £22 per day, every 9th day is free. Ideal if you work from home or are starting a business and would like to spend time with like-minded people without the commitment of a permanent office.

There are desks in the main area and up on the mezzanine level, the studio has a balcony which overlooks the shared cobbled courtyard with tables to eat lunch on. You will have access to the extensive library of design books and our social networking sessions.

The Chocolate Factory is a friendly community of studios tucked down a quiet road on the doorstep of bustling Dalston. Jacksons Art and Handover sign painting supplies are right next door, and Kingsland Road is a couple of minutes walk away.

Sarah Hyndman tells the story of Star Wars in 15 fonts

Wake up and smell the fonts at TEDxBedford

We are all type consumers and typefaces, or fonts, play a vital role in our everyday lives. They help us to navigate, they help us to make choices, they help us to shop, they keep us safe and sometimes they even play a game of sleight of hand.

“Fonts turn words into stories.” To demonstrate this Sarah shows the story of Star Wars in 15 fonts.

That was great Sarah, the garbage crusher made me giggle!” Eugenie Smit

“Fantastic talk from the fantastic and very talented Sarah Hyndman Geraldine Marshall

“Just because I’m talking ‘typography’ there’s no need for me to be all serious and ‘Times New Roman’ about it.”

“A brilliant #type talk. Loved your transformation from Times New Roman. True show it not say it.” Sandra Dartnell @mdh_sandra

“If fonts tell stories then we must be conscious about the stories we choose to tell” @TEDxBedford

“Fonts are like multisensory imagination grenades”

“You would have loved @TEDxBedford Sarah Hyndman shows how type can alter experiences” @mdh_sandra

“That was BRILLIANT” Renaud C Haslan, “That was awesome!” Lisa Kent

Researching the psychology of fonts

Posted in psychology of fonts, psychology of typefaces, Sarah Hyndman by Type Tasting on August 22, 2014

Graphic designer Sarah Hyndman looks at typefaces from the type consumer’s point of view under the banner of ‘Type Tasting’. Her book The Type Taster will be published later this year and she will be talking about typography during the London Design Festival at the V&A.

Sarah explains that “I’m researching the psychology of fonts and typefaces from the type consumer’s point of view. I’ve created a series of fun and thought provoking surveys as part of my ongoing research. These explore how we all respond to typefaces, how they stimulate different senses, trigger memories and what different personalities they have. I’m especially interested to know what non-designers think”

#FutureOfType? at the St Bride Library

Posted in Type Tasting by Type Tasting on April 5, 2013

A workshop in which you become part of a Steampunk style Twitter feed on the #FutureOfType?

Thursday May 2nd from 6.30-9.30pm
In the Bridewell Hall, St Bride Foundation
Tickets £25 · Concessions & Friends of St Bride Library £22.50 · Students £20

Take part in a workshop exploring Victorian display typefaces from the St Bride Library collection whilst discussing the future of type.

Type samples from the collection will be available as templates so you can recreate the letters by hand. These will range from Grotesque sans serifs of the 19th century to the decorative letters by Louis Jean Pouchée

During the evening you will hand render tweets received about the topic. These will be combined to create the Steampunk style Twitter feed and form the basis for the group discussion.

What is the #FutureOfType? Will it follow fashion trends, evolve with advances in technology, or morph into something we can’t yet imagine? Tweet your vision of how type will develop in the future quoting ‘#FutureOfType?

Sarah Hyndman runs Type Tasting workshops. These are sessions in which participants get away from their computers and get their hands dirty – experimenting with type and exploring its expressive qualities. Sarah is creative director of design consultancy With Relish. She studied an MA in Typo/graphics at the London College of Communication and subsequently set up and run the year long Experimental Typography evening course there which she ran for six years alongside her commercial practice.

Happy Easter Eggs?
